In this blog post, our current and incoming students will introduce themselves so that you can get to know them a little bit. I am a Wichita State University student majoring in English and Spanish Literature with a <\/span>Certificate in Spanish for the Professions<\/span><\/span><\/a>,<\/span><\/em> and I am also an undergraduate research assistant on the <\/span>Alce su Voz <\/span><\/em>healthcare language access project funded by the <\/span>Promoting Equitable Access to Language Services in Health and Human Services<\/span><\/span><\/a> (PEALS) initiative of the <\/span>Oficina de salud de las minor\u00edas<\/span><\/span><\/a> (OMH). <\/span>Alce su Voz<\/span><\/em> is important to me because I am passionate about serving my community. As someone who grew up interpreting for my family and still does so, I think it’s incredibly important for my community to know that they have the right to access their needed information in their own language. While working with <\/span>Alce su Voz<\/span><\/em> I have been able to help reach the Spanish-speaking community and help people learn about the different ways to advocate for their linguistic rights that affect their day-to-day life.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My name is Alondra Aguilera, I just graduated with a degree in Pre-K – 12 Spanish Education from Wichita State.<\/a> Alce su Voz<\/em> has given me an opportunity to use my skills in designing materials and using social media as a method to advocate for members of my own community here in Wichita, which is greatly important to me. I hope to continue advocating for the Latine community here in Wichita and to work for more equity towards our community. My work on this project until now has been funded by the Kansas Health Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My name is Jorge de la Hoz. I am currently studying for my MA in Spanish<\/span><\/a> at Wichita State University. I came to know about the organization Alce su Voz<\/em> from one of my professors, Dr. Rachel Showstack. This organization is important to me because it allows me to help the community. Even though I have only been in Wichita for a short time, Alce su Voz<\/em> has allowed me to connect with many individuals and learn about many social realities. I am in charge of translating, proofreading and editing content, and look forward to continue doing so with the organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My name is Ra\u00fal Rangel-Fern\u00e1ndez. I am originally from Guadalajara, Mexico. I am a graduate student at Wichita State University working on a MA in Spanish and a graduate student at KU working on a MA in Slavic Linguistics. I am the Graduate Research Assistant working alongside the <\/span>Increase the Reach<\/span><\/span><\/a> (ITR) grant to help increase vaccine equity in Guatemalan Indigenous communities in the state of Kansas. I have experience with two Mayan languages, Kaqchikel and Yucatec Maya and I am looking forward to being a voice for a community that has often been left without a voice. <\/span>Alce Su Voz<\/span><\/em> is a great organization that allows me to continue to give voice to the community. I am looking forward to what\u2019s to come. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My name is Maame Adwoa Amissah Ankrah. My major is MA-Spanish, and I am also pursuing a certificate in Spanish for the Professions. Alce su Voz<\/em> is important to me because it helps me put into practice the translation and interpreting skills and the ethics that I have learned, as the organization advocates for Spanish-speaking patients to be able to have access to quality healthcare with the help of trained interpreters. I am looking forward to understanding more about the needs of the Spanish-speaking communities and seeing how I can use my bilingual ability to help as well as, improving my interpreting skills. I will be the graduate student research assistant on the OMH PEALS award in Summer 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alce su Voz es importante para m\u00ed porque me ayuda a poner en pr\u00e1ctica las habilidades de traducci\u00f3n e interpretaci\u00f3n y la \u00e9tica que he aprendido, ya que la organizaci\u00f3n aboga para que los pacientes hispanos puedan tener acceso a una atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica de calidad con la ayuda de int\u00e9rpretes capacitados. Hello, my name is Marili Bravo. I am an undergrad student at Wichita State University and a research assistant on the OMH language access grant. My major is Pre- law Criminal Justice. This organization is important to me because it is something I strongly believe in. Alce Su Voz<\/em> has had a great impact with my community among the issues of translation with health equity. I have been able to see the different impacts of the opportunities of aid the organizations bring because of the workshops from Alce Su Voz<\/em>. Furthermore, I am extremely ecstatic to see what is to come from the organization Alce Su Voz<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hi, my name is Melissa Medina and I am a graduate research assistant working on the OMH language access grant for Alce su Voz<\/em>. I have worked in health care for the past decade and know the barriers to interpretation services. As a child I used to be an interpreter for my mother who is Spanish speaking only. I joined the effort by ensuring health services organizations provide high quality and appropriate interpretation services. I look forward to ensuring health service organizations provide high – quality and appropriate language services to non- english speakers. In the summer, we will continue conducting our interviews and educating providers on language access resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Savannah Paschal<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Savannah Paschal is graduating this semester with a BA in Pre-K-12 Spanish Education and plans to go to law school in the future. Savannah manages the participant support stipends and conducts research with Alce su Voz. As recently highlighted in WSU News<\/span><\/a>, our current focus on civic engagement grew out of an idea that Savannah proposed as a class project in Dr. Showstack\u2019s Spanish in the U.S. course. Savannah is incredibly excited to continue to help the local Hispanic community in their work with Alce su Voz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
